Femme Menswear.
I may be a minority on this, but my favorite Anne Hathaway look on Oscar Night was her Lanvin Tux. I have profound respect for a woman that can rock menswear, as well as a deep appreciation for androgyny in high fashion.
And those custom made Brian Atwood sparklers: best accessory by far, and the epitome of statement footwear! Plus who doesn’t love a pretty pair of pumps?
But that’s not to say that I didn’t love Anne’s 7 other looks, especially the white Givenchy Haute Couture (by Riccardo Tisci) gown, the burgundy Atelier Versace, and the B&W Vivienne Westwood. Rachel Zoe has an amazing eye for red carpet showstoppers, and Anne looked absolutely superb in all of them.
But going back to the beginning of this post, I must say that there are others before Anne who have shown us that women can be handsome too. Case in point:

Rihanna at the 2009 Met Costume Gala, and Janelle Monae, whose signature look is a finely tailored tux.

Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn, the original proponents of menswear as womenswear!

One hand in the air for the Big City.
Photos from V Magazine’s New York Issue. Featuring a number of Big Apple celebs…most notably Marc Jacobs and Lady Gaga on the cover.
I just want to note that Debbie Harry looks uber chic in that Donna Karan LBD, and Chloe Sevigny’s layered socks/Miu Miu footwear are fiercely intriguing. I also love that Gaga sports underwear and crazy-ass heels like it’s a t-shirt and jeans.
Of course (and to no surprise) it’s all photographed by Mario Testino.
Let’s hear it for New York!

Two things I’m loving right now…
1) Chunky layered necklaces. I’m all about statement jewelry in general. Generally, it’s harder to find big, chunky pieces at fast fashion stores in the mall. So why not layer? Plus you can mix and match this way.
2) Mixing prints. I love the way it looks when it’s done right. Mixing prints was a fashion taboo for a long time. Now that it’s on trend, the thought of it makes me feel fashionably adventurous! Plus it makes for some fun and challenging wardrobe experimentation. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
If you’re digging what I’m saying, then you should know that the above photo is all Forever 21, which means you can do all this for less than $50. Cheap AND Chic!

Funny Girl.
Jennifer Aniston channeling Barbara Streisand for Harper’s Bazaar USA, September 2010. Bazaar recreated some of Streisand’s most iconic images, and I never realized how similar they look! It’s uncanny!
Doppelgangers aside, these are gorgeously taken photos, and with all the elegance and sophistication that was Barbara in her heyday.
This begs the question: Has time, in fact, rewritten every line?

It’s not just Red Bull that gives you wings.
Urban Outfitters UK can give you wings too. These Bitching & Junkfood Feather Wing Shoulder Pads (yes, that’s what they’re really called) are pretty…well…BITCHING!
This is an exclusive item available only on UO UK’s website. It’s on the pricey side, but I don’t mind just gawking and wishing.
If I had them, I would put them on over a plain military-style blazer and karaoke to some KILLERS songs. Brandon Flowers, where you at?

Yes, it’s true.
Dolce Vita for Target collaboration! I’m SO THERE! Can’t wait!
See product photos and prices at RACKED. Set for release on Aug. 22 (though it seems that select stores already carry them)! Is it bad that I’m planning to buy at least three of those styles? EEK.

When I watch The City, I root against her…but DAMN! I can’t deny that Olivia Palermo has great taste and an amazing sense of style! Ok FINE…she’s super gorgeous too.
But I still don’t like her on the show!
Oh man…GUILTY PLEASURES…you will rot me to my core.

America, EFF YEAH!
Getting more patriotic on 4th of July…and a tad dressier. I never actually wore this in public, since the weekend ended up being a casual one overall. Still, it was a worthy effort and deserved a post of its own.
One thing I love about 4th of July weekend (and other long Holiday weekends) is the shopping. I hit up the local mall on 4th of July Sunday and the Camarillo outlets the following Monday, and I walked away with a ton of great bargains (unfortunately for my wallet). The denim jacket I’m wearing was only $15!
Ah, the joys of consumerist culture.

Salute Your Shorts.
Getting a little patriotic on 4th of July, but keeping it casual and simple with a striped tee and a pair of shorts. Let me just say that a good pair of classic, well-made, and nicely fitted basic bottoms will last you so long (and they don’t have to be expensive - these were $14.99). I’ve had these navy ones from H&M since 2007 (3 years now), and they’re still amazing.
On another note, one of my favorite current trends has been the oxford. These are BOSS as far as flats go, and they’re definitely my “go-to” shoe of the moment! They go with everything!

Long Legged.
It’s just an illusion. I’m only 5’2”, actually. But nude platform pumps and minis do wonders for elongating my legs…or making them seem elongated. Take a mental note, my fellow vertically-challenged ladies. We may not be tall, but we can make ourselves look tall.

Ushering in Some Style (Pt. 3): Getting the look
Usher is most likely wearing designer clothes in his video, which most likely have the designer price tag. If you want his look, paying thousands of dollars is completely unnecessary. In fact, the jackets shown above are from H&M and Urban Outfitters.
The gray H&M blazer (left) is from their Spring 2010 Men’s Collection. It is similar to Usher’s because it has the black contrasting trim on the edges, pockets, and lapels. It has a more casual look and feel than Usher’s black blazer, but definitely has the same amount of style. Not to mention that gray is a great alternative to black. It goes with other clothes just as nicely, and it will make you stand out in a place (i.e. a bar, club, or wedding) where many men are wearing black.
The Urban Outfitters MG Black Label jacket (right) also has a similar look and feel to the leather bomber that Usher has on in “OMG.” It’s functional - with a removable hood and zip pockets at the front and chest - and ultra stylish. Also, it’s made from Nylon, which is machine washable and has the same subtle shine as genuine leather, which is often more expensive, heavier, and thicker. However, faux leather is a great fabric alternative too!
Now, get your jacket on and don’t forget your basics!

Ushering in Some Style (Pt. 2): Jackets go a long way
First of all, sorry for the low quality stills of Usher. Despite my poor screen capturing skills, I’ve managed to get photos of my favorite looks from the “OMG” video.
WHY are these my favorite looks? It’s simple. The jackets. He’s wearing the same basics with them, yet the jackets give off two very different looks.
The jacket in the first photo (left) is a simple black blazer. But what makes it special is the leather trim on the edges of the jacket, pockets, and lapels. The subtle shine and contrasting texture of the leather adds some style points and says, “Hey, I appreciate the details.” Cool details are good things to look for in menswear since it’s generally not as diverse as women’s clothing.
On the other hand, blazers tend to be dressy (not that it’s a bad thing). Most men like to dress them down with jeans and a nice pair of sneakers - maybe the occasional hoodie layered underneath the blazer. But what Usher does in the second photo (right) is dress down his basics with a more casual jacket. Enter the leather bomber jacket. Classic, yet youthful and trendy. Why not shake things up a little?
I know that Summer’s almost here, and jackets won’t be in season during hot weather. Nevertheless, jackets are KEY when it comes to punching up style. Invest in a good, timeless one, and it should take you far.
